LESSON EXTENSION
If instructor would like to also demonstrate how germs could be spread through touching various objects, this lesson extension will engage children in doing so.
· Begin by selecting various washable objects from around the room and placing them on group tables.
· Pour Glitte-nizer on children’s hands, a different color on each child per group.
·Have children rub hands together to get ‘germs’ on both their fingers and palms.
·Instruct the children to pick up an item, play with it a bit, and then trade it with another person in their group.
· Have children look at their hands- they once again have different ‘germs’ than they started out with.
· Assist children with washing their hands to get rid of “germs”.

- Stop the trading when the items have passed through every child in the group’s hands.
· Have children look at their hands- they once again have different ‘germs’ than they started out with.
- Guide the children in picking up an item and checking to see how many colors of ‘germs’ the object has.
- Explain that items such as the ones used can also pass germs from person to person; this is why they must always wash their hands before eating and after playing.
· Assist children with washing their hands to get rid of “germs”.
- If possible, have children also wash their items free of ‘germs’.

- What can we do to protect others from our germs when we cough or sneeze?
- What are some examples of times when we should wash our hands?
